Having spent much of my childhood summers in a caravan near Gorey, Co. Wexford, my memories are of long stretches of sandy beaches, bustling towns and BBQ’s. While I know the coastline from Wicklow down as far as Rosslare pretty well, when I was writing the Time Out Guide I had to explore the southern part of the county. South Africa has become a popular destination for the Irish with the promise of sunshine, beaches, vineyards and sightings of the Big 5 (lion, buffalo, hippo, rhino, elephant). The most common route is to fly into the cosmopolitan Capetown, venture along the spectacular Garden Route and do a safari in one of the private reserves on the south-east coast. Read more
I’m not sure what made me decide to do it, but one day I decided to quit my very stable and well-paid job, pack my bags and travel Asia on my own for four months. I wanted to see more of the world at my own pace, to my own agenda and write all about it. Within 6 weeks of making my decision, I was on a plane to Vietnam with nothing more than a guide book to South-East Asia, a new camera, a pad and pen and a vague idea of where I wanted to go.
I often do the travel slot on Ireland AM with Mark and he’s usually been to at least one of the destinations I’m talking about, which always makes it more interesting. Travelling is subjective so I think it’s good to hear what other people think of places I’ve visited. Read more
